10 Tips on How to Change Careers and Make it Work

10 Tips on How to Change Careers and Make it Work

Knowing how to change career paths in the middle of life is tricky. There are all kinds of advice on getting a new job, but you are looking to change career tracks altogether.

  1. First and foremost, check in on your education and see where you stand against the crowd that is just graduating this year. You might need to brush up on your skills, especially if you are entering fields like medical care or computer technology.

  2. Not everyone is going to appreciate that you want to change careers. In fact, if you are older than 35 you might be hearing about how you are probably just in need of a fancy sports car, an affair, or some other mid life crisis. Present yourself with all the seriousness that the 22 year old college graduate has, and then some. Show people that you are serious by being well informed, knowledgeable, and genuinely excited about the prospect of learning how to change careers.

  3. As you start transitioning from looking to change careers to lining up interviews, keep a close eye on how competitive your skills are for your new field of interest. As long as you keep abreast of changes, devote one class per semester to continuing education, and maintain your enthusiasm then your transition will be much easier. It is not easy learning how to change career paths, but it can be done successfully at just about any age.

  4. Make sure you know the financial health of your bank account. Unless you are extremely gifted, talented, or well connected your new career will also mean a new, lower paycheck. You can change careers without going under. It just takes a little planning.

  5. Take the time to check out the actual working environment in order to ensure that you will be able to comfortably do whatever skills are necessary.

  6. If you need to get certification, develop some sort of qualifications, or simply prove that your educational behavior has been accurate thus far.

  7. When looking to change career tracks you need to expect a certain amount of resistance. While a well meaning family can belittle or discourage you from trying, remember that one out of every five people is looking. Stick to your own goals rather than appease others.

  8. You are not alone and this means that you can network with people while you are searching for that next new potential job. Networking is often more productive than submitting applications.

  9. If you want to know how to change careers and become accountable only to yourself, you can always start your own business. While the economic development of your area needs to be strong, so does the global economy. You stand a change of successfully changing your career, but you have to stay committed to the idea.

  10. Finally, remember that nothing happens overnight no matter how badly we might want it to. You might find that patience has nothing to do with learning how to change career paths, but it does. Finding a job in your new area of interest might take some time but it is going to happen.
